History
- Colonial roots. Until the 1990s it was a narrow lane, a back-street of M G Road, with a couple of restaurants and several colonial bungalows. It grew into a commercial and nightlife hub after that.
- 2014. An IED blast on Church Street killed one person and injured four.
- 2017 redevelopment. Work began at a cost of ₹9 crore, making it the city’s first street paved with granite cobblestones, laid in a Kasuti pattern.
- 2020–21 “Clean Air Street” pilot. The street was closed to cars as a pedestrian zone, and IISc monitored it. Daily footfall rose 92%, more than half of establishments reported higher revenue, and air quality improved. The experiment ended on 31 May 2021 after the project was handed to the BBMP.
Location
Church Street sits between M G Road (north) and Brigade Road/Residency Road (south), in the heart of the CBD. It runs from the Brigade Road–M G Road junction to Koshy’s café. Koshy’s sits at the junction with St. Marks Road, where Church Street ends.
Connectivity
- Metro: MG Road station is about 0.5 km away, roughly a 5-minute walk. The station has a Church Street entrance. Cubbon Park station is about 240 m from a venue near the St. Mark’s Road end.
- Pink Line (upcoming): MG Road will become a Purple–Pink interchange. The Pink Line’s opening was still listed as planned for around March 2027. Dates have slipped repeatedly, so check BMRCL for the current status.
- Rail: Majestic is about 6.5 km away.
- Air: The airport is about 34 km away. A cab typically costs ₹800–1,500, depending on vehicle and traffic.
- Road/bus: Brigade Road and MG Road have BMTC bus stops nearby. Parking on the street is limited, so a cab or metro is easier.
