History

  • Colonial roots. Until the 1990s it was a narrow lane, a back-street of M G Road, with a couple of restaurants and several colonial bungalows. It grew into a commercial and nightlife hub after that.
  • 2014. An IED blast on Church Street killed one person and injured four.
  • 2017 redevelopment. Work began at a cost of ₹9 crore, making it the city’s first street paved with granite cobblestones, laid in a Kasuti pattern.
  • 2020–21 “Clean Air Street” pilot. The street was closed to cars as a pedestrian zone, and IISc monitored it. Daily footfall rose 92%, more than half of establishments reported higher revenue, and air quality improved. The experiment ended on 31 May 2021 after the project was handed to the BBMP.

Location

Church Street sits between M G Road (north) and Brigade Road/Residency Road (south), in the heart of the CBD. It runs from the Brigade Road–M G Road junction to Koshy’s café. Koshy’s sits at the junction with St. Marks Road, where Church Street ends.

Connectivity

  • Metro: MG Road station is about 0.5 km away, roughly a 5-minute walk. The station has a Church Street entrance. Cubbon Park station is about 240 m from a venue near the St. Mark’s Road end.
  • Pink Line (upcoming): MG Road will become a Purple–Pink interchange. The Pink Line’s opening was still listed as planned for around March 2027. Dates have slipped repeatedly, so check BMRCL for the current status.
  • Rail: Majestic is about 6.5 km away.
  • Air: The airport is about 34 km away. A cab typically costs ₹800–1,500, depending on vehicle and traffic.
  • Road/bus: Brigade Road and MG Road have BMTC bus stops nearby. Parking on the street is limited, so a cab or metro is easier.

Route

By metro:

  1. Take the Purple Line to MG Road.
  2. Use the Church Street exit and walk a few minutes to the street.
  3. Walk down towards Brigade Road, or the other way towards St. Mark’s Road and Koshy’s.

Suggested walking order: Brigade Road end → bookshops and cafés in the middle → Koshy’s and St. Mark’s Cathedral at the far end.

Top Things to Do

  • Browse bookshops. The street is called a pilgrimage trail for book lovers. Blossom Book House is the best-known stop and one of Bengaluru’s oldest and most loved.
  • Coffee at Koshy’s. A common way to end the evening is a cup of coffee at the legendary Koshy’s.
  • Eat and drink. Church Street is the most happening lane between MG Road and Brigade Road, with several bookstores, popular restaurants and a few shops. Empire Restaurant and Church Street Social are two well-known spots.
  • Look at the street art. The large wall art at the Church Street entrance of the metro station is hard to miss. The “Rock, Paper, Scissors” artwork at the metro station is also worth a look.
  • Live music and nightlife. Pubs and restaurants spill music onto the street in the evening, and it often hosts street performances and cultural events.
  • Visit St. Mark’s Cathedral at the end of the street.
  • Walk the cobblestones. The Kasuti-patterned paving is worth noticing.
  • New Year’s Eve. It is very crowded, so go early.
  • Pop-culture shopping. Animation Souk is a pop-culture store on the street.

Retail

Church Street is better for browsing than for big-brand shopping. Expect:

  • Books: independent bookshops, plus comics and graphic novels.
  • Gifts: souvenir shops, art galleries and quirky stores.
  • Bigger retail: for major brands, walk to Brigade Road, MG Road or Commercial Street. Brigade Road and Commercial Street are the main shopping destinations nearby.
